The Museum “Kalevala Puisto” is situated in a Kymenlaakso by the lake. The building will present collection of life and history of the local communities at the same time becoming cultural centre.
Our approach was to create the original museum features, and whilst making the space work intensive and flexible through the introduction of contemporary, historically-referenced additions. The design sensitively unites a new contemporary extension with a national finnish design. The three-storey extension combines modern materials of render, timber and zinc cladding and simple, precise detailing over a light well and exhibition displays. In lower and upper ground floors open plan spaces for the education centre, main gallery and café. The museum promotes access for the whole community, actively encouraging children to visit, and incorporates a new lift and entrance ramp to facilitate wheelchair access.
